With every passing day I’m starting to see more and more redefined wedges. Taking a new identity from the cork/raffia bohemian shoes of the past.
So the big question is are wedges back or are they a completely new shoe in itself. I cannot lie, I was never really a wedge girl because up until recently I didn’t really wear heels, especially not casually. But in a world of everyday athleisure styling my desire to wear a casual heel has risen.
Not only are wedges back (or just better), but they are much more creative than the woven artisanal wedges from the past.
When I think of wedges, it can go two ways. Either southern belle rushing her favorite sorority, or bohemian baddie who makes her own jewelry and specialty salts. Honestly, even those styles are growing on me, but that’s not my point of discussion here.

I can’t keep my head away from these sculptural, almost architectural wedges. The ones with futuristic shapes, playing HEAVY with negative space. I absolutely die at the ones that have the tiniest crack, resembling a big and chunky block heel. They are so cool, and I feel like they represent a revival of the wedge. Taking it from a Southern Chic to City Girl.

These originally came out in 2010, and by combining the sportiness of a sneaker and the dressiness of a heel, an intense clash between formal and everyday wear was born. They were re-released in 2022 as the Isabel Marant - Balskee, garnering an incredible amount of support. It is nearly impossible to walk around SoHo today without spotting a pair.

- These sporty chic shoes have had a resurgence in everyday wear. People love a good juxtaposition, and from these Isabel Marat sneaker wedges, a new kind of athleisure is born. The Adidas Speedcat Wedge OG Sneaker, combines both the Marant shoes with the current hype Puma has encountered. This city style of workout shoe has also encouraged others like it, such as Boxer Boot styles. Which I’ve been absolutely loving recently.

- Another well known classic is the Chloé - Black Maxime Wedge Sandal. If you don’t recognize the name, those are the thick rubber PLATFORM wedges with all the graffiti-style writing on the heels. An absolute conversation piece that came out amidst the bohemian styles of fall 2024. They are a neutral shoe, making them easy to style, but because these are so recognizable, I question the rewearability.

- Finally the biggest and loveliest shoutout to none other than Jeffrey Campbell. Now I know I don’t have the final vote, but I dare say that he is the King of unique and dreamlike wedges. Especially given the fact that he changed the laws of gravity with the early 2010’s fav: The Jeffrey Campbell Night Walk or The Nightlite Bootie. These shoes ruled the streets of tumblr and helped support the rise of many a YouTube stars. With their shocking silhouette they were a successful science project and a cultural icon at the same time
